Charge and tasking

The KYVL Leadership Team authorized the Affordable Learning Exploratory Task Force as an ad hoc KYVL task force with an initial term through June 2021. In July 2021, the task force became the Affordable Learning Steering Committee.

Affordable Learning Steering Committee Charge

The charge of the Affordable Learning Steering Committee is to facilitate efforts to expand availability and use of low- and / or no-cost high-quality educational resources for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, with an initial focus on undergraduate higher education.

The steering committee coordinates the work of project teams focusing on specific aspects of the overall project and makes recommendations to the Council on Postsecondary Education by way of the KYVL Leadership Team. A member of the steering committee serves as a liaison to each project team.

Affordable Learning Steering Committee Tasking, F23-24

Work with Affordable Learning Project Coordinator to implement and facilitate the work of the project and project teams, including:

  • Pursuit of grant funding / implementation if awarded
  • Peer review platform
  • Analysis and reporting of KY Student textbook and course materials survey
  • AffordableLearningKY website
  • Collection and publishing of Kentucky OER data
  • Encouraging and facilitating OER course marking
  • Coordinating Open Ed Week and other training opportunities
  • Fostering disciplinary communities of practice for adoption and creation
  • Supporting incentives for faculty OER creation and use
  • Exploring statewide OER publishing platform(s)

December 2023

Affordable Learning Steering Committee Tasking, F21-22
  • Five representatives from the steering committee will take part in the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) OER Institute from July 2021 through July 2022. Institute participants will serve in a liaison role between the institute and the steering committee.
  • Develop charge and tasking for, identify members of, appoint liaisons for, and convene initial subgroups, based on priority and capacity.
  • Develop recommendations for strategic planning and sustainability.

Affordable Learning Exploratory Task Force Charge and Tasking, F20-21

The charge of the task force is to develop recommendations for expanding availability and use of low- or no-cost high-quality educational resources in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The initial focus of the task force is undergraduate higher education.

The group will report on its work at the 2021 Joint Session.

Affordable Learning Task Force Tasking, F20-21

The tasking of the Affordable Learning Exploratory Task Force is to:

  • Explore existing affordable learning efforts within and beyond Kentucky.
  • Identify materials, platforms, and models for funding, partnerships, coordination, oversight, etc., with the greatest potential for success and impact in Kentucky.
  • Develop recommendations for affordable learning in Kentucky for the next one to three years.
  • Cultivate / maintain an awareness of potential grant opportunities / funding tie-ins.

Makeup of Affordable Learning Steering Committee The steering committee includes a representative from each of Kentucky's public universities, three each from KCTCS and AIKCU, and a KYVL leadership team liaison. The Affordable Learning Program Coordinator represents KYVL and the Council on Postsecondary Education. The KYVL Executive Director may also participate.

The steering committee for F2-23 has been expanded to include a representative from each of Kentucky's public universities and three each from KCTCS and AIKCU, and includes a KYVL leadership team liaison. The KYVL executive director represents the Council on Postsecondary Education.

Makeup of Affordable Learning Steering Committee, F21-22

The steering committee is formed around a core of KYVL member institutions currently engaged in and actively exploring OER or other affordable learning efforts, and includes representation from SAALCK, KCTCS and AIKCU. Other steering committee members include a KYVL Leadership Team liaison and the KYVL executive director with the potential for participation by additional CPE staff.

Participating institutions may be represented by one or two actively engaged individuals, such as librarians, instructional designers, faculty champions, etc. Additional institutional representatives may participate in the subgroups.

Participating institution will be represented by one or more librarians along with other appropriate staff, such as instructional designers, faculty champions, etc.

The group will submit a recommendation for chair to the Leadership Team for approval.
